About This File

‘Russian Onions’ is a collection of the distinctive architectural church domes I photographed on a recent trip to Russia. These domes were created to allow the weight of the heavy Russian snows to slide off. Though I was captivated by these domes, I was even more impressed attending the Orthodox services in the churches. However, in most of them, photography was not permitted. One that allows photography is the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg (the last set of images). (3:41)

Gary: Great collection of "Russian Onions". Nicely captured and treated in the AV.

They certainly are fascinating. We never made it to Moscow, but did see several in St Petersburg. You were fortunate to see the Church on the Spilled Blood with so few other people there.

How many of the churches you photographed are still used as churches? I always through the Church on the Spilled Blood was actively used as a church, but discovered otherwise when we were there (didn't do enough homework before we visited)

Thanks for the AV

Thanks, Gary!

I also love to visit famous cathedrals when I travel in Europe.

P.S. If I may suggest the correct name would be "Russian onion domes" -> "Русские луковичные купола".

Jim, I think all or most of the churches are now used as churches. A few have been made 'museums' and you can take photos inside them. I am no expert on this. The best experience was to be in the church during a service. Quite impressive.

We saw a few weddings taking place too, in churches.

Thanks...

Greetings Igor,

No disrespect intended. I just wanted to have the title to be a little bit of a play on words or a bit of humor.
