About This File

Easter 2013, I went on my first photography holiday to the Glencoe region and the Isle of Skye with a friend from my camera club. The weather was almost perfect, sometimes we complained that the sky didn't have any clouds! I am used to having only minutes to take my photos, as result of 15 minute rest and toilet stops on a coach trips. On this holiday I had all the time in the world. We left our B&B at 9am and didn't return until 10pm. We had planned and researched the trip meticulously and well in advance. We had everywhere we wanted to visit with GPS coordinates, routes, etc. We didn't worry about waiting for 30 mins for the light to change. Almost everything was taken on a tripod. I had my 2007 Nikon D300 with a Sigma 10-20, and Nikon 18-200VR. I also had my 2009 Nikon D700 with a 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 VRII. I also had my iPhone 4, which I used with a tiltpod and 645Pro app or ProHDR app.

The images in this slideshow contains were half taken with the D300 and half with the D700. There is also one iPhone image, I bet you can't tell which!

V6 achieved 2nd place and a PAGB Sliver Medal in the NIPA AV Festival 2014. It was the first time a 'Photo Harmony' sequence achieved a medal. The judges were Malcolm and Maggie Imhoff, and it was clear that they were proud supporters of the photo harmony genre. Previous judges often outlined their belief that a sequence with narration was merely a slideshow and not an Audio Visual, and that with good narration and added sound effects any image/music sequence would never win at competition level. The Imhoff's were a breath of fresh air, they considered such 'dictates' as outdated and simply wrong. In his feedback Malcolm suggested that I could improve the sequence by removing the six images in square format. I initially replaced these with only images, but it didn't flow well, so I went back to my raw files and created landscape versions at 16:10 instead of 1:1. This is the final result, I hope you like it.

What's New in Version V7

Released

  • V1 was with this music. V2 was longer with different music. V3 I changed some of the images. V4 changed more of the images and ran each image through Topaz Clarity. V5 I changed back to the first music as I liked it better. V6 was shown at the NIPA AV Festival. V7 on the advice of the judge at the AV Festival I removed 6 square images and replaced them with landscape ones. I tweaked the timings of the slide duration and transitions to fit the music better.

I am a bit surprised no-one has left a comment here so I will remedy that. I am glad you changed those square images in the middle of the show as it flows so much better now. The quality of the photography is one of the strong points of this AV, something many enthusiasts seem to forget about. I have been there and almost stood in your shoes for some shots. I hope to be back there again this year around October (2014) This sequence is enough to encourage me to make the journey. All 10,000 miles worth from Australia.

The music is perfect and it gives the sequence that start middle and end the old diehards keep going on about. I have never felt that a start middle and end needed to be blatant as in a story. It can be implied too and that has been done very well here.

This is the type of show that will promote PTE and I bet this show was given 30 times the effort of most to reach this level. Keep em coming

Sadly the level of response to all shows is very poor both on the Forum and this site.  I certainly agree with all of Barry's comments especially the standard of photography and the music and the revisions have certainly been worthwhile.  Having seen the show some four times I still find my eye wandering to the side of the screen to see if the mini-zooms are used in every shot and I find this very distracting. Maybe be you are trying to instil some subconscious visual effect but once it breaks into the conscious, for me, it spoils the experience. It would be nice to have your reasoning on this.

Mark,

Congratulations on your second place.  It is great to see a show where the photography is that good and every composition and balance of the picture is thought out.

Hello Mark,

Beautiful images, if I could make a couple of comments.

The single Mono image in the middle jars. However it is at a natural break in the music with a short piece of dialogue. If you must have the mono , could you lead and finish a set of three over that piece of dialogue? as the mono would suit the mood  at that point.

Also the last two images break the mood as the horizons are so far of each other. I would suggest pick one only and finish or adjust the last to match up the horizons.

I really liked the sequence and admire your skill as photo harmony is not one of my strengths! Excellent photography and like Barry I recognise many of the mountains in the Western Highlands. I did not find the mini zoom distracting and if it had not been mentioned I wouldn't have noticed. What was the piece of music by the way?
